Hotel laundries

All businesses have to look at their costs in the current climate and hotels are no exception. We are seeing a growing trend towards the leisure industry bringing in all or part of their laundry rather than use a linen hire company.

With the cost of petrol and utilities rising at an enormous rate, the cost of collecting and delivering linen is increasing similarly. This has made businesses look at the alternative of installing commercial laundry equipment and doing it themselves. The fact is that a small hotel can halve their costs just by installing laundry equipment that will launder their towels, a 20 to 30 room hotel can get their cost down to below 10p per towel when all associated costs are taken into consideration.

The upfront capital cost of the equipment can be eliminated by renting, this includes all service and repairs and unlike linen hire it is inflation proof.

Our approach is to look at the current amounts that are being sent out, we will then put forward a proposal showing all costs and the likely saving. Commercial laundry equipment is recommended and a full site survey is carried out to establish where it can be installed.

As a supplier of Electrolux commercial laundry equipment we can offer the largest range from 6kg to 110kg capacity washer and dryers.

To get a free analysis of your potential savings please fill in our contact form.

When hygiene is critical, there is no room for compromise. Put yourself in the hands of the experts.

When the Health and Social Care Act 2008 was updated in October 2010, a new code of practice for health and adult social care on the prevention and control of infections and related guidance was introduced. The new document sets out what registered providers of health and social care services should do to ensure compliance with the Care Quality Commission.

Good laundry hygiene is critical when conforming to the new code of practice and having the right equipment in place can significantly enhance the prevention and control of infection. As experts in Barrier Washers, Electrolux Laundry Systems (ELS) can give you and your establishment peace of mind by providing the best defence against the spreading of micro-organisms and cross infections. Keeping linen clean requires excellent and consistent practice and discipline. Using Electrolux Barrier Washers makes this simple.

For more information please call us on 01732 424012

ELECTROLUX – A FRESH APPROACH WITH MICROFIBRE CLEANING

When it comes to cleaning solutions, Electrolux Professional is the microfibre cleaning cloth and mop specialist and offers laundry equipment with specific features and programmes that set them aside from traditional laundry equipment.

Mop cleaning machines from Electrolux feature special heating elements covered in stainless steel that eliminate the build up of lint. They have a unique lid in the inner drum allowing the owner access for preventative maintenance and easy cleaning. Because drainage is often a problem as mop fibres tend to clog drainpipes, Electrolux machines feature a unique electric drain valve that ensures quick drainage for clog free operation. In addition, a range of specially designed stainless steel lint collectors are also available. Larger door openings and automatic dosing of liquid detergent supply complete the system and ensure ease of use for staff.

“Electrolux Professional’s machines guarantee the best method for washing microfibre effectively”, said Kurt Fryer, Electrolux’s Key Account Manager for the Healthcare and Facilities Management Sector. Professional cleaners know the advantages of microfibre. It has a high absorption power and requires little, if any, addition of detergent in order to be cleaned effectively. Microfibre works by attracting dirt and drawing it into the material. Used dry the soil and bacteria are attracted into the fibres by static charge; used damp the soil and bacteria are attracted by capillary action. Professional laundering is essential to protect the static and capillary action upon which the system is based. “Mircofibre mops and cloths cleaned in a professional washing machine are hygienically clean and will last longer, saving on consumable cloths, as well as reducing the risk of infection”, concludes Kurt.

A choice of control system offers the highest degree of flexibility, control and ease of use. Compass Control® includes economy, time and performance functions that can
be easily selected by the operator according to their needs. Energy and water consumption are reduced by approximately 30/50% when using the economy setting, also resulting in a higher return on investment. A specific microfibre and mop cleaning programme designed exclusively is available in the wash programme library. Ease of use is guaranteed with the addition of 2 quick start buttons to allow operators to simply press one button and carry on with their normal duties.

Clarus Control® is the optimum choice for cleaning healthcare facilities. Fully programmable for the most stringent of hygiene requirements, it also enables the monitoring of every part of the wash cycle and with additional software, operators can guarantee and validate thermal disinfection and minimal usage of water and energy.

It was a visit to the microfibre barrier laundry at St Thomas Hospital, London, which convinced David Sowoolu, Site & Facilities Service Manager for the Heart Hospital, the Electrolux equipment held a better solution to address the microfibre laundry needs. “Environmentally, the ELS machines save all round,” he commented. “The laundry is washing over 700 mops and cloths per day and this microfibre laundry system negates the need for harsh chemical additions during cleaning, high wash temperatures and the Electrolux washing machines dose the wash automatically with a liquid soap detergent.”
The Heart Hospital in London is one of the major cardiac centres in the country, offering dedicated, and specialist heart care. It is at the forefront of national and international research with thousands of patients benefiting from its cutting-edge diagnostic and surgical techniques. Infection control remains the highest priority for UCLH NHS Trust and the decision to transfer to microfibre cleaning at The Heart Hospital was made after substantial research by Annette Jeanes, the Trust Director of Infection Control.

The implementation of microfibre cleaning at The Heart Hospital was undertaken after extensive market testing of products and washing machines.
The 100-bed Heart Hospital has now benefited from the installation of a new Electrolux laundry to cater for the microfibre and mops and cloths. Six machines in total have been introduced to the in-house microfibre laundry department – three W4180H 18kg washers and three T4300LE heat pump dryers giving a low energy outcome solution especially when the Trust is being challenged to reduce energy consumption and its overall carbon use.
In order to reduce the spread of infection or contamination The Heart Hospital decided to eradicate the use of traditional dolly mops in preference for microfibre, which has been proven to be more effective in controlling the risk of infection.
The Heart Hospital also provides washing of mop and cloth microfibre to The National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery. This Hospital has 229 beds with many more out-patients clinics sends its mops and cloths at The Heart Hospital daily, using a small electronic van to pick up and drop off the laundry, demonstrating a more environmental friendly approach for this critical service. There is the possibility of expending this service further as UCLH expands as all the Electrolux machines have yet to reach their output capacity.

Save Money with OPL

For hotels of any size, a major concern is sourcing laundry services that combine excellent hygiene and cost efficiency. Electrolux Professional offers hoteliers the option of On Premise Laundry (OPL) facility, which has been proven to reduce costs by up to £87,120 per annum.

The benefits of an OPL include significant savings compared with outsourcing to a third party. By taking into account factors such as hotel occupancy, number of wash cycles per week, amount of laundry per room, utility and detergent costs, not to mention cost of installation and labour, a typical 200 room hotel can save £87,120 every year, based on a five year lease, simply by installing an OPL from the extensive Electrolux range. After the first five years and the lease is paid, the payback and return will increase, offering even more savings.

With the reputation of supplying a comprehensive range of commercial washing machines, dryers, ironers and finishing equipment to the hotel trade, Electrolux assures the highest quality of equipment, all designed, delivered, installed and commissioned to the establishment’s individual needs.

An OPL offers onsite quality control and the flexibility to effect considerable annual savings. Electrolux Professional Laundry operates a flexible leasing scheme, with the options of monthly quarterly or annual payments, over 1-7 year periods. Furthermore, there is no large capital outlay or deposit and the company will match the hotel’s laundry requirements to provide the best machines for the job, with all staff trained onsite.

Electrolux Professional has an excellent customer care package, and as standard provides an interest free warranty and tax breaks for profitable companies under the leasing scheme. At the end of the lease, there is the option to purchase the equipment outright.

An OPL is cost efficient with options available for any size of hotel. Compared with outsourcing, which brings with it the hazards of lost laundry and long contracts savings for a small 30 room hotel with just one Quick Wash and one Quick Dry machine can amount to almost £2,000 per year.

Electrolux Professional has been supplying the hotel trade for many years, from the Craws Nest Hotel to the prestigious group of Elite hotels including Luton Hoo. Every machine installed is maintained to the highest levels throughout the contract and the result is cost savings, control over quality and faster turnaround.

Energy costs spiralling

Businesses face higher costs this winter unless they take action quickly. All of the major power companies have imposed or announced huge price hikes in energy, some of these are listed below.

The problem that many businesses in the Care sector have is that they cannot save energy by turning the central heating down or insisting their residents take showers instead of baths, so where can you make savings?
The laundry is the place where the biggest savings can be made. Keeping old inefficient machinery going costs money in repairs and servicing but the bigger expense is the energy they use. New heat pump technology has produced tumble dryers that consume a quarter of older dryers which can save the cost of replacement inside 3 years in some cases. Electrolux washing machines consume less water which means that less electricity is required to run them.
Please call us for a free review of your current operation where we will show you the savings that can be made.

Scottish Power was the first major supplier to announce price increases this summer, hiking gas prices by 19% and electricity prices by 10% on 1 August.
British Gas was next to follow suit, increasing the cost of its standard gas by 18% and electricity by 16% from 18 August.
Third in line was Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE). Its customers will see gas prices increase by an average of 18% for gas and 11% for electricity from 14 September.

Lesson learned

When a new product is launched by a leading manufacturer, we are keen to see the features and work out how they will benefit our clients. The latest machines are the Electrolux Quick Wash and Quick dry from Electrolux, small 6kg loads aimed at the sheltered accommodation sites for their communal laundries. On first inspection they were economical to run but then all Electrolux commercial products are, the washer has the AWS system for water savings and the dryer had the residual moisture control which automatically turns of the programme once the clothes are dry. What we weren’t sure of was the colour, they were black, a colour not normally associated with laundry equipment.

Last week a client ordered 2 of these washers and dryers for their laundry and I went to oversee the installation, I am glad I did. These are great products, they are so easy to use, have all the features and benefits required in the sheltered accommodation laundry and look fantastic. I have learned a lesson after many years in the industry, which is to always see and use a product before deciding on whether it’s right for your clients.

If you want to know more about these products then please fill in our contact form and I will send you the information via email.
